The building is founded at-grade with four stories of wood-frame construction over two levels of reinforced concrete podium. The development also directly links to the Bay Trail, giving residents a nearby place to bike, hike, and admire nature. Rockridge Geotechnical (RG) performed a geotechnical investigation to support Sares Regis Group’s due diligence of the site before providing final geotechnical recommendations, design consultation, and geotechnical services during construction.
During the investigation, RG discovered layers of relatively soft soil and a layer of potentially liquefiable soil. To mitigate the potential for unacceptable differential settlement of the building under static and seismic conditions, RG recommended a shallow foundation system supported on soil strengthened using ground improvement techniques. Drilled displacement columns were selected as the most appropriate ground improvement technique because the columns could be installed with minimal vibrations and noise while reducing the volume of spoils that require disposal at a landfill.
