Located in the heart of Union Square, the former 8,423-square-foot surface parking lot with one level of below-grade parking was transformed into an upscale 11-story hotel with a rooftop terrace, a main lobby, retail space, and a fitness center. The hotel has 195 guest rooms and 1,200 square feet of privately owned public open space, or POPOS, on its rooftop.
Rockridge Geotechnical (RG) performed the geotechnical investigation, consultation during design, and geotechnical services during construction. To explore the subsurface conditions at the site, RG performed two cone penetration tests and drilled one test boring inside the pre-existing basement parking using limited access equipment. Rockridge Geotechnical identified the primary geotechnical concern for the project as limiting lateral movements and settlements of existing buildings that border three sides of the excavation. The hotel is supported on a mat foundation bottomed on native dune sand.
