Southland Mall

Hayward’s Southland Mall is a commercial hub for the city. The mall, which was opened in 1964, contains one full floor and a second, partial lower level. These floors contained a theater, restaurants, and retail stores; Rockridge Geotechnical supported the renovation of Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the former anchor stores of the mall, as well the construction of a new movie theater.

Rockridge Geotechnical performed a field investigation and provided geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of the renovations to the existing building and the new Century Theater.
The existing building renovations included the replacement of foundations that were unable to support the renovated building loads.
The new theater consisted of construction of a new cinema utilizing the footprint of an existing basement and expanding the basement. The building included excavation up to about 22 feet deep to construct the new basement and foundation. Due to relatively shallow groundwater and the potential for liquefaction below the existing basement, a mat foundation with soil anchors was implemented.
