Rockridge Geotechnical (RG) provided geotechnical engineering services during design development, permitting, and bidding for two 100% affordable housing apartment buildings. The two buildings are nine- and five-stories tall and are connected by an internal courtyard and sky bridges.
The building along Mission Street (east building) consists of one level of retail/mixed-use commercial space and eight levels of affordable housing. This building is located within the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) zone-of-influence (ZOI), which necessitates the building be supported below the ZOI with sleeved auger cast piles. The structure along Wiese Street (west building) is a five-story structure with one level of mixed-use commercial space, four levels of housing, and a rooftop garden.
RG performed a geotechnical investigation to develop design recommendations for the project, including foundation designs for the east and west buildings consisting of alternatives to have no net surcharge on the adjacent BART substructure and shallow foundations, respectively. RG also provided consultation to the project team and corresponded with permit agencies as well as BART during design development. RG provided geotechnical observation and testing services during the construction of the project.
The project won the 2022 Gold Nugget Merit Award for Best Affordable Housing Community.
