UC Berkeley - Naval Architecture
Building Expansion, Berkeley

San Francisco-based Gensler Architects designed the new wing and restored the Naval Architecture Building in conjunction with historic preservation specialist Knapp Architects based in San Francisco. Rockridge Geotechnical performed a geotechnical investigation for the project and provided recommendations for temporary drilled soldier pile shoring and underpinning for excavation beneath the existing Naval Architecture Building, and foundation design of the new structures. We also provided geotechnical observation and testing services during construction.

The excavation was supported with drilled, cantilevered soldier pile-and-lagging shoring, which required casing the drilled holes to prevent granular soils from caving below the relatively shallow groundwater table.
